Swiss Foods

Today I want to talk about the food of Switzerland.

Switzerland is a multi-ethnic country so we don’t have a national food. The type of food you’ll get depends on the area of country you are in. Our dishes are rooted in dairy products though – cheese, milk, cream, butter and/or yogurt find their way into the majority of our dishes.
Most of the food found in Switzerland is very rich without many herbs and spices.

One of our most famous dishes is cheese fondue. It came from the Swiss Alp area. It’s a mixture of two to three melted cheeses, in a pot with white wine, kirsch or cider (depending the area you’re in). Small pieces of bread are dipped into the melted cheese. Raclette is based on melted cheese too. You hold a large block of reclette cheese over a fire and scrape the melting layers off. You eat it with potatoes, bread, and other things.

Some other traditional Swiss foods are rösti (which is grated potatoes, fried on both sides, and formed into pancake or a tiny cake), nusstorte (a walnut tart) and chocolate in any form.

Since most villages and towns have a weekly market that sells local, seasonal farm produce these ingredients are easy to get.
