A sport that almost everyone loves to play and watch is Hurling.
Hurling is played by two teams equipped with sticks (hurleys), chasing a small ball across a football-sized field. The ball can be prodded along the ground like in field hockey, may be carried on the hurley or smacked mid-air like a baseball. Speed is a very important aspect in Hurling. It is amazing how watching to evenly matched games can amaze and take your breath away!
There are several more sports that are big favorites in Ireland. One is Gaelic Football, which is very similar to soccer. Only a player can can pick up the ball and run in rugby-like manner away with it. Some historians of the game claim that both soccer and rugby are bastardized versions of football. Games can be enjoyed almost everywhere. Occasionally "International Rules" games are held, 2006 an Australian team toured Ireland.
My personal favorite is soccer which is also a popular sport. But there are other sports such as: golf, boxing, horse racing, showjumping. There is also my dad's favorite to watch is Greyhound Racing.
A more traditional Irish sport is road bowling. The object of the game is to bowl a ball along a two- or three-mile-long course. The winner is the one who completes the course in the fewest number of throws. Bowlers use metal balls called “bullets”. This sport is definitely a older traditional sport rather than a popular one.
Many people love visiting and watching some of the unique and different sports that you do not get to see in alot places and get to see what makes them so great to us!
Fact of the day: Here are some Irish words that have entered the English language include banshee, galore, bother, smithereen, hooligan, tantrum and donnybrook.
